Hall Puck Hires New Coach for 2017-2018 Season

South Orange, NJ, March 28, 2017– Seton Hall’s Club Hockey team has announced they have selected a new coach to replace outgoing coach Gary Biggs who led the team the past three seasons. Bringing back a former Pirate is expected to inject new life into the program.

The search for a new coach brought many applicants, both new and old faces and some impressive hockey resumes from across the state. The search has since come to an end and former Pirate star Carl Meixsell will be taking control of the program. Meixsell graduated from Seton Hall in May 2015, and currently works as an accountant at Deloitte. His plans to fill out his staff are currently unclear but he has said he is interested in bringing back another former Pirate to work alongside him. The official hiring will take place at 9pm on March 28th in the Team Room in the Richie Regan Rec Center.

“I am honored to have been given this opportunity,” Meixsell said. “There are so many experienced and respected coaches in this region. I think the program is really at a pivotal moment here, and to have the chance to help push the team in the right direction will be amazing. Playing on the team for four years gave me a lot of experience with the league and I feel that my understanding of the style of play common in our league will help me out tremendously.”

At the conclusion of the 2016-2017 season, Biggs announced he would step down from his position and help the team transition to new leadership. Biggs had instant success with the Pirates leading them to a fourth place regular season finish and a heartbreaking loss in the playoff finals in his first season (2014-2015). However, the past two seasons were filled with frustration and the team failed to qualify for the playoffs.

“We tried many different things the past two years, from changing our lines, to starting different goalies, to experimenting with new practice formats, even bringing in new assistant coaches. Nothing seemed to help us find success in closing out games,” said Biggs.
